Aromatherapy, Ritual, and the Birth of Teo
A month later: honoring the tools that carried me into motherhood
A month has passed since the arrival of my son, Teo. As I write these words, I find myself reflecting not only on the moment of his birth but also on the rituals and tools that guided me through the intensity of labor with presence and strength.
Throughout my pregnancy, I made the decision to prepare myself holistically. I wanted more than just a birth plan—I wanted to carry with me practices that would help me stay centered, grounded, and deeply connected to my body. That’s where aromatherapy, music, movement and breathwork became my companions.
The Rituals That Carried Me
In the days leading up to labor, I created small rituals of self-care. After each bath, I would rinse with herbs, oils, or gentle infusions, honoring my body as it transformed. These practices were more than symbolic—they were a reminder that I could turn inward and find steadiness even as everything around me shifted.
When contractions began, I leaned into aromatherapy. Certain oils supported relaxation, while others helped me focus my breath. Alongside this, I played music that resonated with calm and rhythm, allowing my body to flow with each wave. My breath became my anchor, helping me ride through the surges without resistance.
A Birth That Came Swiftly
What I didn’t expect was how quickly Teo would arrive. By the time we reached the hospital, things moved fast—so fast, in fact, that in just 20 minutes he was born. There was no time for long hours of waiting or intervention. Instead, what unfolded was a powerful, connected, and natural experience.
Teo and I were both healthy, and in that moment, I felt the profound alignment between preparation, trust, and surrender. The rituals I had cultivated gave me a sense of calm, allowing me to welcome his birth not with fear, but with presence.
Nurturing Self-Care
Now, one month later, I see how essential those practices were—not just for labor, but for the early days of motherhood. Small acts of nurturing self-care, whether through herbal rinses, mindful breath, or quiet moments of reflection, continue to be my way of staying balanced as I care for both Teo and myself.
Motherhood is teaching me every day to embrace presence, patience, and tenderness—with myself as much as with Teo. This first month has been a reminder of how powerful simple rituals can be in holding us steady through change.
In the weeks ahead, I’ll be sharing more about the specific practices that supported me—aromatherapy, herbs, and mindful movement—so that those curious or preparing for their own journeys can explore them too.
Thank you for taking the time to read my reflection. May it remind you to honor your own rituals of care, however simple they may be.
With love and gratitude,
Marcela 🌿
